2019’s amazing travel season isn’t over.  In California, the change of seasons makes it even more interesting.

You’ll love exploring the San Francisco Bay area, not that you’ll have to leave San Francisco itself. From museums and historical sites to boat cruises and scenic drives, SF city is an intense experience. This is why millions of people around the world flock here at all times of the year. SF has always inspired the iconic and epic.

If you should have plenty of time, then a trip down the coast on the Pacific Coast Highway and up into wine country will be awesome. Quaint towns, towering forests, and gently rolling landscapes make every moment precious.

If you’re a Canadian, Brit, German or Aussie, this region is a wonderful escape, something you won’t forget soon.

Best Attractions in San Francisco

When you arrive, your mind will spin with all there is to see. The most visited spot is the most visible — the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, so you’d be wise to experience that first.

Built in the 1930’s, you’ll be blown away by your first drive, or walk across this magnificent 2 mile structure. The engineering is astonishing even by today’s standards. On the other side of the bridge is mountainous area called the Main headlands. This is where you take epic photographs of the city San Francisco with the Golden Gate Bridge in the foreground. It’s a very popular place.

Sausalito and Tiburon

Two of the most beautiful towns in this area are Tiburon and Sausalito. They’re seaside towns which means you can arrive by boat or drive there.  The drives in the area of Tiburon are really fun. You’ll also discover restaurants and parks with nice views of the water and San Franciso in the distance. There are hotels and Airbnb short term rentals which make a relaxing, quiet place to stay. Not far away is the Muir Forest with its huge 250+ foot tall trees and magnificent walking trails.

Coit Tower

In the middle of the city is Coit Tower. It’s a slender, 210 foot high, white concrete structure sitting atop Telegraph Hill offering amazing 360 degree views of the city. Built in 1933, it’s a key part of San Francisco’s lore.

Of the few cable car systems left in the US, San Francisco’s are the most unique. You can take a ride up and down the hills, slowly soaking in the views of downtown SF including China Town, while learning more about how this amazing cable car network was constructed and operates.

Fisherman’s Wharf

Fisherman’s Wharf is one of the most well known seaside attractions in the world. On Pier 39, you can watch sea lions resting on designed platforms, dine at restaurants with a view, visit the aquarium, and shop the local shops. A tour on Ferry to the infamous Alcatraz Island is available.

Try some of the restaurants in the Embarcadero district, rent some skates and do some ice skating, or take a stroll through the Ferry building.

Yes, there is ice skating in the park across from the Embarcadero district.

If you love nature and parks, and have never visited Japan, the Golden Gate Park is a wonderful experience. You can walk the paths in the Japanese Tea Garden, enjoy the flowers at the Conservatory of Flowers, and learn about the region’s sea creatures at the Golden Gate Park Aquarium.

The Palace of Fine Arts is one of the last remaining remnants of 1916 Panama Pacific Exposition. It’s towering architectural features are still awe inspiring over one hundred years later. Truly amazing and a nice place for a walk.

It’s next to one of San Francisco’s most unique and pricey neighborhoods, typical of the San Francisco housing market, and not far from the marina district where can watch world class sailing yachts. Walk to the end of the pier to hear the Wave organ powered by incoming wave energy.

San Francisco Museums

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Legion of Honor, de Young Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, and Asian Art Museum are a big thing to art connoisseurs. It’s a reminder of how grand life used to be in this country.

High Tea at a Historic Hotel

You won’t want to leave San Francisco until you’ve experienced some of its Victorian or Edwardian era charm. The Palace Hotel, Fairmont San Francisco, and Ritz Carlton all have outstanding restaurants offering views and opulent Victorian architecture for you to enjoy. The well known Alamo Square offers great views of the Painted Ladies victorian houses and the city of San Francisco.

And for restaurants, there’s simply no end to food experiences here in SF.

The Barbary Coast

On the western edge of the city is the spectacular views of Land’s End. It’s a long walk from parking area’s down to the beaches and rocky shores, but fun to do if you’re fit. You might see migrating whales off in the distance and there are whale watching tours.

Cliff House

Cliff House CompWalk the beach south of Cliffhouse on the Barbary Coast, and then head up to dine at one of SF’s most unique restaurants called Cliff House. It was built in 1858 on a rocky outcropping with panoramic vistas. As you can see from this photo, the restaurant’s exterior has changed throughout the years.

NAPA Wine Country

The region north of greater San Francisco is the NAPA wine country. Here you can visit some of the world’s very best wineries, quaint BnB’s, take a balloon ride, and enjoy drives through the rolling countryside reminiscent of Italy.

You can learn much more about NAPA valley wine tours here. The NAPA valley film festival begins Nov 13th. You can do a wine country bike tour , play golf, go to a spa, or even enjoy yacht wine tour. Anything to suit your tastes in NAPA.

The Pacific Coast Highway

Drive as I have down the coast toward Big Sur and Pfeiffer State Park, for an unforgettable tour on one of the world’s best scenic highways. Unforgettable panoramic mountainous seascapes, crashing waves, and waterfalls are here waiting for you.

 

Drive all the way past Monterey where the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium resides.

The Pacific coastal route along California is one of the most picturesque auto routes in the world.  You can continue past historic Bixby bridge down to Big Sur to see McWay waterfall at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.
